Sustainable Buildings & Energy Efficiency Working Group

EIC Chair - Alison Crompton, Regional Director, AECOM
The EIC’s Sustainable Buildings & Energy Efficiency Working Group is actively engaged in policy issues right across the built environment (including both new and existing buildings) with a particular focus on retrofit in the non-domestic and commercial sectors. Membership of the Group is diverse, being comprised of consultancies, property developers, contractors, suppliers, and developers of sustainable technologies – we strive to ensure the views we present to Government are representative of all these parties.
The Group takes the approach that whilst the source of energy production is hugely important, there is little point in pumping energy, even ‘green’ energy, into a leaky building, and that energy efficiency measures should always be the first choice. It is deemed to be a win-win situation, leading to potentially huge savings on utility bills for the consumer, whilst creating jobs and helping the UK meet its Climate Change obligations.
To this end, the Group lobbies for policies which will encourage the greater uptake of sustainable technologies and materials in buildings. The Group is engaged in lobbying which affects all aspects of a building’s construction, design and retrofit including, but not limited to: the Green Deal; the Renewable Heat Incentive; Display Energy Certificates; Feed-in Tariffs; changes to Part L of the Building Regulations; the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings and Energy Efficiency Directives; and BREEAM in Schools.

Issues currently being discussed:
  • Policy drivers for energy efficiency uptake
  • Green Deal
  • Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme
  • Display  Energy Certificates
  • Renewable Heat Incentive
  • EU Energy Efficiency and Energy Performance of Buildings Directives
