Carbon & Environmental Management Working Group

EIC Chair - Sunil Shah, Director, Acclaro Advisory.

The EIC’s Carbon & Environmental Management Working Group represents all organisations engaged with overarching carbon and environmental issues – from consultants, to engineers, to technology solutions providers. This working group meets 4 times a year.

The Group lobbies for a wide range of carbon reduction policy drivers, and operates on the principle that sound carbon management is good for our quality of life, good for our economy and good for business. In addition to this, the Government has many legally-binding carbon reduction targets – not least an 80% reduction on 1990 emission levels by 2050 – and EIC lobbies for those policies which will help the UK meet these commitments. The Group works to ensure that there is the necessary policy framework and related regulatory drivers to achieve this goal.

The Group’s main policy focus at present is the simplification, and ongoing success, of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), married with the implementation of a recent industry-wide EIC Carbon Reduction Commitment Phase 2 options report, which was launched by the DECC Select Committee Chairman, Tim Yeo MP.

Beyond the CRC, the Group is engaged in the implementation of mandatory GHG reporting and the promotion of sustainable (public) procurement across the Government’s spending profile.

An emerging and increasingly important area in which the Group has become engaged relates to embedded or imported carbon emissions. We anticipate this becoming an important, and growing, policy area in the near future for both business and Government.

Issues currently being discussed:
  • Smart meters in the non-domestic sector
  • Need for coherent carbon management framework for businesses (EU ETS, CRC, GHG reporting regulations)
  • Promotion of sustainable (public) procurement and related Government Buying Standards
  • The evolving policy framework around embedded/imported emissions.
