Air Quality Control Working Group

EIC Chair, Dan Williams, Johnson Matthey

The EIC’s Air Quality Control Working Group represents organisations actively involved in creating and marketing solutions that dramatically reduce the environmental impact of transport. It has over 40 Member companies, including world leaders in the supply of exhaust after-treatment, suppliers of catalysts and catalysed components, suppliers of clean and low greenhouse gas fuels and consultants covering transport and air quality issues. The Group meets 4 times a year, and has regular guest speakers from Central Government whereby EIC maintains an ongoing and active dialogue on local and national policy issues related to Transport Pollution.

The UK is currently failing to meet European targets on PM10 and NO2 emissions under the Ambient Air Quality Directive. Bad air quality costs the UK economy between £8.5bn and £20bn per year via poor health, and can cut life expectancy by seven or eight months on average across the UK.

The Group is currently lobbying and campaigning for a National Framework for Low Emission Zones and a National certification scheme for retrofit technologies as part of a framework for Local Government action to help improve local air quality.

Current issues being discussed:

  • Need for more ambitious UK air quality strategy in light of EU infraction proceedings
  • Need for national framework of Low Emission Zones and extended bus retrofit funding
  • Reducing emissions from Non Mobile Plant/machinery
